Phyllis Davies 1.Morgana Court have been celebrating the 100th birthday of one of our residents with a party for friends and family to mark her milestone.

Phyllis Davies was born in Lewistown, near Ogmore Vale, in 1916 during the First World War and turned 100 on 9th June. She celebrated her landmark birthday at Morgana Care Home, part of the SilverCrest Group, with a special party and telegram from the Queen.

But it wasn’t just her stories from the last 100 years that our residents and staff were keen to hear about. Stuart Davies, the Care Home Manager at Morgana Court, explains: “Everyone wanted to know her secret to looking so young at 100 years old. She replied “Pond’s Cream, my dear!”. I know a few people who will be stocking up with that now.”

Mrs Davies, who has been a resident at Morgana Court for a year, spent the day celebrating with her family and fellow residents with cake, a harpist playing her favourite music and a visit from the Mayor of Bridgend County Borough which the staff had spent weeks organising.

Phyllis met her husband Emlyn Davies, a coal miner while living in Lewistown, and they were married when she was 17 years old. In 1935 they settled in Bryncethin and went on to have four children, Brian, Arthur, Emlyn and Wendy.

Phyllis led a busy life raising her children and, as a skilled tailoress, she enjoyed making a lot of her own clothes and taking care of her family. Her husband Emlyn passed away in 1964.

Pauline Marshall, Phyllis’s daughter-in-law, said: “The family would like to thank the incredible care home staff for spoiling her and making the day so special.  We are very happy with the  care Phyllis is receiving, she is very content and has actually become more alert since moving into the care home.”

“Phyllis is a true survivor, she has had to deal with a lot in her life but has always been a tower of strength to our family and this party was a great way to show her how much we care.”

The Mayor, Councillor Reg Jenkins said: “It was a pleasure to meet Phyllis to celebrate her 100th birthday. She was an absolute delight to be with and a beautiful person inside and outside with great humour.  The staff are doing an excellent job and clearly providing a great quality of service.”

Stuart Davies, said: “We had been planning this day for so long and we were thrilled that she loved every minute of it. One of our highlights was when the harpist played songs from Phyllis’s favourite film The Sound of Music.”

We wish Phyllis a  very happy 100th!
