We’re proud of our team across all our SilverCrest care homes and we look forward to introducing you to as many of them as we can.

First up we had a quick chat with Nurse Emily Thornton and deputy manager at our Tŷ Nant Care Home in Williamstown, RCT and asked her about life as a nurse at SilverCrest…

Q: How long have you been a nurse and have you always worked in a care home?

A: “I’ve been qualified as a nurse for 4 years and spent time at Mill View and Llwynypia Hospital, Rhondda Cynon Taf in the dementia unit so this gave me a good insight into dementia care. I joined the team at Tŷ Nant a year ago and I absolutely love it here.”

Q: Why do you like working in a care home?

A: “It was a good experience in the hospital but I knew it wasn’t for me. I am a people person but I felt hospitals lost the personal touch as you don’t have the opportunity to build up relationships and get to know patients as well in that environment. “

“Since joining Tŷ Nant I felt at home straight away – it’s so warm and welcoming. There is a real sense of sense of belonging here and I see it as this is the residents home and I am caring for people in their own home which is a privilege.”

Q: How does it differ from hospital nursing?

A: At Tŷ Nant our main focus is person-centered care and I love building up friendships with residents and their loved ones. You honestly feel like you’re part of their family sometimes!”

“Having a more hands-on approach at the care home feels like I’m actually nursing as I am involved in all aspects of residents’ daily lives. This includes meal times, activities or just chatting to them this all makes a big difference.”

Q: What do you do in your spare time?

A: I am a new mum so my little one keeps me busy but otherwise I like going for walks and heading to the beach when I can.
